Groupage cargo
Groupage means transporting goods jointly with different owners in a single container. Groupage transportation, or groupage, is used when the quantity and size of goods do not fill an entire container, necessitating shared use of another container. Familiarity with various container types is essential for those involved in cargo transportation. One type of container known as “FCL” contains goods under a single customs declaration, considered exclusive. However, when items in these containers belong to multiple customs declarations, it is termed less than container load (LCL). In other words, goods from various merchants are packed together in a single container.
One critical point for merchants is delivery time. Despite the economic advantages and cost savings of groupage transportation, high-speed delivery cannot always be guaranteed. This drawback is viewed negatively alongside its benefits. In groupage transport, mandatory standard items should not be loaded alongside goods not requiring these standards due to customs clearance delays. All goods transported via groupage require two types of bills of lading. The first, the “master” or MASTER B/L, is issued by the actual carrier, reflecting the agreement between the main carrier and the consolidator. The second is the CONSOLIDATOR B/L, issued based on each shipper’s (customer’s) carrier instructions. Air groupage is typically preferred for its speed in reaching destinations, making it popular among merchants.
